Roman candles are a classic kind of firework that fires off one or more exploding pyrotechnic stars (or shells). The stars are loaded into a “candle” or tube made of special heavy-gauge cardboard.
Candles vary in length from 1 to 3 feet with anywhere from 5 to 10 shells. The fuse is placed into the tube and fed to the end. Light it up and sit back! The fuse lights up the shells one at a time and shoots into the sky with bursts of colors, whistles, and sparkles.
Roman candles are packed with fun. They put on a dazzling show with just about every change of color, boom, crackle, and sizzle imaginable. It’s everything you want in a classic firework.

The Roman candles come in different lengths from one foot to three. They come with anywhere from 5 to 10 shots or balls. The shot is loaded into a tube made of heavy gauge cardboard. Sometimes there are more than one ball in the Roman candle. They are stacked on top of each other with a lifting charge separating them. The fuse is inside the tube. When lit, it ignites one charge at a time.
Roman candles can be lit off from your fireworks launch pad or mortar tube. A cinderblock works well, too — and some Roman candles can even be staked right into the ground.
Safety tip — always use fireworks in a large clear area outside. Do not stand over the top of fireworks at any time.
